Occasionally I see an urban hero riding with grocery bags hanging off of each handlebar like a set of streamers. I feel nostalgia for my college years. I used to bottom out my [mountain bike] shocks with my streamers all the time. But the handling was always a nightmare. You basically have to stick to the sidewalks so that you can closely monitor the contents of your bags - ”Careful! The mayonnaise is slipping out!”
So I’m wondering what better ways people have found? How would you bike with a bunch of bananas, a gallon of milk, a chicken breast, a head of broccoli, and two boxes of cereal?

I’d stuff it in my messenger bag, now if a loaf of bread were involved it’d be a streamer. Anyway best of luck to you.

Backpack if you wanna be simple. Fancier, get a basket. Fanciest, get a rear rack and one of these:

Anything fancier and you might as well drive your car.

Sweet racks Kirk.
I also like the “hurricane proof” grocery bag. I don’t think any of the reusables they give away at the grocery have that guarantee.
What about a tricycle?

Luckily, I live only two blocks from the grocery store and usually walk. However, I often bike with larger loads – cases of beer, etc
– and do a combination of strapping to my rear rack and putting in my front basket. A front basket mounted to the frame or fork is best for heavier loads. Some bikes are better for this type of handling (my Dutch bike, for sure) but anything is better than hanging bags on the handlebars! Sometimes if I have a lot I’ll hang a canvas bag over my shoulder, but never on my handlebars.
