I took this video a few weeks ago in Richmond. This ride was started in honor of Harrison (12). He is a cancer survivor and has always loved cycling. When he was diagnosed, his dad (Big Al) started to compare his journey with cancer to the Tour De France. Every chemo treatment was a new stage in the race – the ultimate mental and physical test.
Finally two years ago, Harrison finished his grueling ‘tour’ with cancer. To celebrate, Big Al and Harrison started the Tour De Harrison to help other kids fight cancer. The tour is on fathers day each and has already raised over $35,000 for the Rally Foundation for childhood cancer research.
I just emailed Harrison’s mom and dad to show them the video, but they might not get it for a few days. They took the whole family to France to watch the final stages of this year’s Tour de France – and celebrate their own victory.
I’ve read several articles recently about local pastors and biking bishops saddling up to raise money for mission and outreach programs in their congregations. My personal favorite is the “Tour de Rev”. These guys are riding a bamboo triple seater 13,000 miles to raise money for World Hunger.
I’m starting to wonder when my own preacher is going to up and leave for 6 weeks to save the planet. Would we still have to go to church every Sunday? Nah! I would just go with him …
In case you haven’t heard, the Urban Outfitters ‘bike shop’ just opened. They partnered with Repubic Bike to sell build-your-0wn fixies. As you can imagine, this really grinds on the purists, but I bet the free market hipsters who own UO are probably seeing gold at the end of the rainbow of cool colors that you can select from. What do you think? [polldaddy poll=1775273]
