I got a phone call the other day from Oshi (the flower guy downtown). He said that they had a surprise for us and that I “just had” to come by. It was raining and we were getting hit with our afternoon runs. Oshi has a tendency to exaggerate, but he seemed pretty serious. Since I’m a sucker for a surprise, I made one more drop and headed for his shop.
me … “What you got?”
Oshi … “Happy Birthday!”
me … “Holy cow! It’s a Green Fleet cake?! No way!”
“Yeah. Darlene made it for you guys for your first anniversary.” Oshi.
I ran out of the flower shop and around the corner to see Darlene on 6th (she’s the cake lady). Her apron is always covered in flour and icing from the day’s baking. She loves her job, she loves cakes, and she loves bicycles.
She said, “I thought it had been about a year since you opened. So I made you a cake! And cupcakes that are healthy, cherry and berry. I thought you guys would like that.”
I thanked her, and high-fived her, and headed out the door. We sent out a party all-call and Green Fleet officially celebrated its first anniversary.
