UPDATE: What?? Tomato Rack Conquered!?

In reaction to our last blog post, the much debated tomato bicycle rack has been conquered! Don’t believe us? Here is the proof:

Our good friend and local bicycle advocate, Linda Themm shared this with us.

It is a little bit like the sword and the stone. People came from miles and miles to try their hand but none succeeded … until now. So we proudly declare Linda the Tomato Rack Queen. Thank you, Linda!

Tomato in Your Face? Mayor Signs Off on Bike Racks

This was a fun delivery …. the folks at the Metro Arts Commission asked us to help out in the new bike rack dedication last night. We were tasked with delivering gifts to Mayor Dean for each of the artists that contributed to the project at a specific time during the speech. Easy. Exciting. Right? Yes!

Before the event, we carefully planned our mission. Here’s how was to go: 1) Team Green Fleet sets up at the new microphone bicycle rack on the roudabout 2) the speaking starts across the street (roundabout plaza) 3) the Mayor says a keyword 4) triggered by the keyword, we nonchalantly make our delivery to cheers and crowd exuberance.

So we picked our keyword … win-win. It didn’t occur to us that the Mayor might say this phrase twice. In retrospect, how could he only say this once? With such a great project, our keyword choice was not so great. We ended up making the delivery 5 paragraphs too soon. But it was still good fun, and we had the Mayor sign our delivery sheet. Booya:

Several news crews were there to publicize the event. Unfortunately, the only clip WSMV took from us were comments from David regarding how the rack at the farmer’s market was partially unusable – a little “tomato” in your face reporting if you ask us.

Let’s address this problem. First of all, cyclists are used to being creative when it comes to bicycle parking. So this is will not prevent anyone from parking their bike at the Farmer’s Market. Secondly, the Arts Commission will no doubt learn from their mistake.

We think the project is still a “win-win” for cyclists. After all, we just got some of the best art in the city dedicated to us. Hopefully no one will use this as fodder for bicycle bashing. I plan on trying out all of these racks as soon as I get a chance.

Green Fleet Delivers Goodies to Kids at VU Children’s

The Green Fleet crew delivered 200+ goodie bags yesterday to the kids at VU Children’s Hospital. The gifts were part of the annual Loews Loves Kids Day.

We left the goodies in the president’s board room in the hospital …

Man Fools Wife / Goes on Bike Ride

Even if you’re a really good welder, don’t try this. The handling would be terrible. I know this from when I was little.

Every time my mom took us to the store, it was a grocery cart rodeo. One man on the back, one man on the front. Those dinky little wheels rode really hard and if you really pushed the turns you could get up on two wheels.

I can see why this guy would want to bring back the glory days.

“My wife lets me ride all that I want!! I just tell her I’m going to the grocery store. She buys it every time!”

New month today and I’m sitting here thinking of what to do. Maybe I should come up with some goals for March??

Of course. After all, you have to take advantage of new things. So I type type up google.

Another Can of Paint Please?

Anybody remember the old rail road tracks on Davidson Street east of Downtown? The asphalt was all chewed up, and the tracks were real man eaters. It was like it was a war zone littered with land mines – a total tire buster. And if you dared hit it with speed, the steel tracks were instant death. It claimed one of my own michelins just last year. RIP.

Now that you have an illustration of the past situation, check it out today …

Woah! Gone are those dastardly tracks! And we even have green swatches in the bike lane (photo snatched from Pat Clements). Fresh. I like it.

Something significant: I think this is the is the first can of green paint for us (cyclists) in Nashville.

Maybe next we’ll get one of those mythical bike boxes?

We are definitely headed in the right direction. In fact, I read that San Fransisco just got their first green bike box last year. Hopefully we aren’t far behind those West Coasters. Maybe we have an “in” with the green paint guy? I hope so. I’ll ask the Mayor next time I see him.
